“Messiah”

“Messiah”

In 1983, a color film was produced for BBC-TV featuring the performance, in the Westminster Abbey, of the Messiah” oratorio, by the Academy of Ancient Music, under the direction of Christopher Hogwood.
Excellent soloists participated: J.Nelson, E.Kirkby, C.Watkinson, P.Elliot and D.Thomas.
With the concern to reproduce the style of presentation of Haendel himself, instruments from the XVII and XVIII centuries were employed, to the full score of 1754, not Mozart’s instrumental arrangement.
The film appears to the TV spectator as though he were in the front row of the Abbey, with the instrumentalists and choir giving new grace to the music of Haendel, and new significance to the biblical texts.
